Counting time between dates, explained
There is more than one honest answer to "how many days apart are these dates," and the difference trips people up constantly. If you check in to a hotel on the 10th and leave on the 13th, that is three nights but four calendar days. Neither number is wrong; they answer different questions. This calculator gives you the plain gap by default and lets you switch to the inclusive count with a single tick.
Calendar span versus running totals
The headline figure is a calendar span — years, months and days — which is how people naturally describe long stretches like "two years and three months." The totals underneath restate that same period as a single running number of weeks or days, which is more useful for arithmetic, billing, or comparing two periods.
How business days are counted
The weekday total counts every Monday through Friday in the range and leaves out Saturdays and Sundays. It does not know about public holidays, which vary by country and region, so treat it as the working-day maximum and subtract any local holidays yourself.
Dates in any order
If you happen to put the later date first, the tool still returns the correct positive totals rather than a negative number, so you never have to worry about which field is which.
Frequently asked questions
Does counting both days add one to the total?
Yes. Unchecked, the tool counts the gap between the dates. Checked, it counts the first and last day too, which adds one to the day total and includes both endpoints in the weekday count.
Are weekends removed from the business-day figure?
The weekday count includes only Monday to Friday. Weekend days are reported separately so you can see both. Public holidays are not deducted because they differ by location.
Can the dates be in the future?
Absolutely. Use any two dates, past or future, in any order. The result is always the correct positive difference between them.
Why does the month figure look odd for long gaps?
Calendar months vary in length, so the months-and-days breakdown follows the real calendar rather than assuming every month is 30 days. The running day total is exact and unaffected.
Is any of this data saved?
No. The calculation runs locally in your browser. The dates are not transmitted or stored anywhere, and nothing persists after you close the page.
Does it handle leap years?
Yes. The day totals are measured against the true calendar, so a range that spans 29 February is counted correctly.
