How the countdown keeps time
The timer reads your device clock once a second and works out how far the target is from right now. Because it is anchored to a fixed moment rather than just subtracting one from a number, it stays accurate even if the tab is in the background and the browser slows its updates down — when you return, it snaps straight to the correct remaining time.
Your local time zone
The date and time you enter are read in your own time zone, the same one your computer or phone is set to. If you are counting down to an event in another country, convert that event into your local time first, then enter it here.
What happens at zero
When the target passes, the timer does not stop or reset. It flips into count-up mode and starts measuring how long ago the moment was, which is handy for tracking how long something has been live or how long since it began.
Presets
The quick buttons fill the target field relative to the current moment — one hour, a full day, or a week ahead — while the New Year button jumps to midnight on the coming first of January. You can always fine-tune the field afterwards.
Frequently asked questions
Does the timer keep running if I switch tabs?
Yes. It is pinned to a fixed target time, so even if the browser pauses updates in a background tab, the display corrects itself to the right remaining time the instant you come back.
Which time zone does it use?
It uses your device's local time zone. For an event elsewhere, convert it to your local time before entering it, and the countdown will be accurate for you.
What happens when the countdown reaches zero?
It switches to counting up, showing how much time has passed since the target. Nothing is lost and the display keeps ticking.
Can I count down to something with no specific time?
Yes. If you only care about the day, set the time to midnight. The presets and the date-and-time field both let you be as precise or as loose as you like.
Is the timer saved if I reload?
The countdown lives in the open page and is not stored, so a reload clears it. Set your target again and it starts counting immediately. Nothing is ever sent to a server.
Is it accurate to the second?
It refreshes every second against your system clock, so it is as accurate as the clock on your device.
